Health Workers Issuing Covid-19 Certificates To Unvaccinated Persons In Enugu

Some people who did not take Covid-19 vaccination are being issued certificates in Enugu, THE WHISTLER can confirm.

THE WHISTLER’s investigation on Friday showed that due to the deadline given by some state governments for their civil servants to get vaccinated or lose some statutory benefits, some residents of the state, mainly civil servants of federal establishments, bribe their ways to get the certificates.

A text message from a health officer of a health centre at Nsukka forwarded to a civil servant stated that, “The requirement is: name, date of birth, phone number, address, occupation and the type of ID card he or she is using.”

The civil servant, name withheld, told our correspondent that, “Many of us don’t trust the vaccines because they were hurriedly produced. So, to avoid being victimised, as some states have started doing, we settle with those issuing the certificates and get out of the hook.

“Some of the health workers administering the vaccines have no trust in it. So, why must it be made compulsory?”

A health worker who refused to mention his name said, “The demand for the certificates is increasing. Many people do not want to take the vaccine. Some still think Covid-19 is fake. I think more sensitisation should be carried out. Health workers should also guide their utterances against the reality of Covid-19.”

A health worker, Mrs Nneoma Ogbe, in a reaction, said, “Such act should be discouraged. It will make the impact of the virus devastating if it surges again. I’m surprised why people are reluctant to take it when it is free, and the president, governors and identified health officials have publicly taken the jabs.”

Efforts to get the reaction of the state health commissioner, Prof Emmanuel Ikechukwu Obi, on the matter we’re not successful as at the time of filing this report.

THE WHISTLER reports that the federal government has threatened to make Covid-19 vaccination compulsory. States like Edo are also toeing the line.
