On Monday evening, a driver in a black Toyota Camry crashed into a pedestrian lane where suya, kunu (local pap) and akara (bean cake) sellers have their stands.

The driver, when apprehended by people, admitted that he was ‘sleeping’ while driving.

“It was like a movie about how I narrowly escaped death that evening. That evening, we were all out for our daily business when the accident happened,” said Ukamaka, adding “It is now that I am feeling the shock.”

But her customer who was seated close to her stand was hit by the ‘sleeping’ driver, according to her.

She said, “I was not aware that a car was coming until my niece started shouting my name from a distance. I don’t know how I managed to jump over the gutter to save my life.

“The car could have hit me if I was close to my table and thank God the suya and kunu sellers were far from their stands. It would have been bloody.

“But my customer was hit by the driver,” she added.

Although he tried to escape, the driver was forced to compensate the sellers for his reckless driving, according to the victim.
