How Parents Can Engage Kids During Covid-19 Lockdown – Teachers

The shutting down of schools by the federal government has forced pupils to stay home, perhaps, to the discomfort of parents who’re also forced to stay home.

But the lockdown period could also be a blessing in disguise, as some teachers say it is the right time for parents and kids to bond.

Some teachers who spoke to THE WHISTLER, said that parents should use the lockdown period to fully interact with their kids.

Anyebe Lilian, a teaching staff of the Dominican College, Gusau, Zamfara state, said that parents (particularly the busy ones) should see that the stay-at-home order as an opportunity to know what their wards had been doing in school.

“This is the time for them to sit down, look through their children’s work; at least, from the text book they should be able to know what is taught.

“And most text books these days have made it easier for us to know what should be handled in from first to third term,” she said.

She also said that parents could instruct their older children to teach the younger ones, ( if the parents are not educated).

“Invariably they may even be able to correct them or teach them better than what they have been learning, ” she said.

On her part, Titilayo Aremu, a Nursery one teacher with the Kingdom Heritage Model School (KHMS), Canaanland, Ota, Ogun state, advised parents to closely monitor their kids to know the traits they have.

She also said that school term was already stocked with learning activities, and the lockdown offered parents the opportunity to engage their wards in some physical exercises and household chores.

“They should do some exercises, It’s not only learning, they’ve been doing that in school,” she said.
