Jonathan Advises Leaders To Lose Power With Honor

As an unprecedented presidential race unfolds in the United States of America, former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, has advised leaders across the world to honorably lose an election or any political opportunity if it does not go their way.

He stated this on Friday on his Facebook page.

Recall that during the 2015 general elections, Jonathan (Peoples Democratic Party), had set a record by conceding defeat to President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress before the last vote was counted.

Jonathan was asked by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to lead mediation efforts in the nation of Mali.

On Friday, he urged political actors to prioritize the love of people above the love of power.

His words: “Nobody’s ambition is worth the blood of any citizen. It is better to gain honor at the cost of losing power, than to gain power at the cost of losing honor.

“At any point in time, the power of love should matter more than the love of power. This is my philosophy. I have lived it. It has brought great peace to both my beloved nation and I.

“And I recommend it to all leaders facing challenging situations, either in government, or at the polls, or even in their dealings with fellow political actors.”

The statement is coming when the United States is witnessing a contentious general election.

Former vice president Joe Biden is leading both the popular and electoral votes but incumbent President Donald Trump has vowed to challenge the election in court, citing electoral fraud.
