Giving FRSC Officials Guns Not Buhari’s Idea – Presidential Aide

Presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad, has said the idea to allow Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials to bear arms did not emanate from the presidency.

Ahmad said this in reaction to criticisms trailing reports that the federal government would allow FRSC officials to bear arms to curtail the excesses of road users.

He said, “Not the Federal Government’s idea, it was House of Representatives Committee on FRSC’s recommendation, as disclosed by the Committee’s Chairman, Hon. Akinfolarin Mayowa, who during the corps’ 2021 budget defence explained that the 1992 Act of FRSC allowed the corps to carry guns.”

The House of Representatives Committee on FRSC had disclosed the development during FRSC’s 2020 budget performance and 2021 budget defence on Thursday in Abuja.

According to Mayowa, the 1992 Act of FRSC empowered FRSC operatives to bear arms, but that it was yet to be officially implemented.

The committee had promised to meet with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and also write to President Buhari to ensure the implementation of the Act.

The FRSC Corps Marshall, Boboye Oyeyemi, had urged the committee to help ensure that operatives of the agency were allowed to bear arms as they were now faced with more deviant road users.
