Kano: Cloud Gathers Over Future Of Emir Sanusi

“It has come to the notice of the Renaissance Coalition that the Kano State Government has a plan to send the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, to Bichi; and in the event he resists, he will be deposed.”

That was a statement made by a Kano group, Renaissance Coalition in a press statement by the spokesman for the group, Ibrahim Waiyaon.

The group alleged that if Sanusi declines swapping positions with the Emir of Bichi, he might lose his throne.

The group alleged that the Kano government was making the move despite a subsisting court ruling which ordered the maintenance of status quo pending conclusion of the matter before it.

Recall the court through the ex-parte application by the applicant, Rabiu Gwarzo, restrained Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje from appointing or recognising any purported emir under the Kano State Emirs Appointment and Disposition Amendment Law 2019, pending the hearing of the motion on notice.

“We strongly call on the governor to desist from going on with this alleged plot and such similar actions, which are capable of jeopardising the relative peace being enjoyed in the state,” the group said.

“However, in the event that the governor refuses to heed the good counsel and goes ahead to actualise the dastardly agenda, we will be left with no other option than to call on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in Kano State,” the group had said.

Reacting to this, a former commissioner of the state who spoke to THE WHISTLER on condition of anonymity said the claims were mere propaganda.

“On what basis will he be removed?” he asked. “Has he committed any offence? I think it is just propaganda,” he said.

The Kano State Government in its response dismissed the claims as untrue and false

Governor Ganduje’s Chief Press Secretary, Abba Anwa, in a terse response said that the State Government was not planning to depose the Emir.
