Lagosians React As Sanwo-Olu Adopts ‘Mr Governor,’ Drops ‘Your Excellency’ Title
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s decision to drop ‘Your Excellency’ official title for ‘Mr Governor’ on Wednesday has sparked reactions on social media.
The Lagos State governor had taken to his official Twitter account (@jidesanwoolu) to announce that he was dropping the recognised title to “embrace a more representative one.”
Sanwo-Olu hinged his decision on the need to “review certain features of citizen-government relations which impede the genuine expression of the democratic spirit of our society and the meaningful exercise of the sovereignty of our people.”
The move has generated mixed reactions from Nigerians on Twitter.
Bellow are some of the reactions:
Mr. Governor, this is great ! Can you please fix the roads ? Lagos feels like an outback terrain . https://t.co/ZgpdRAxA9F

In Ondo – Arakunrin (Rotimi Akeredolu)
— Wale Micaiah (@WaleMicaiah) November 6, 2019
In Osun – Ogbeni (Rauf Aregbesola)
In Lagos – Mr. Governor (Babajide Sanwo-Olu)
In Niger – Chief Servant (Babangida Aliyu)
In Edo – Comrade (Adams Oshiomole)
Anyone calling you "Mr Governor" or "Your Excellency" already has access to you. This public pronouncement doesn't increase access to you which is what regular people want. But hey, "Our Governor is Humble" ??♂️ https://t.co/YoPVQZNtUf

This is the best governor in Nigeria, he doesn't want to stress his people. That your excellency self is too long to pronounce and it's been the major cause of Lagos traffic. Mr Governor is a good one, i like that. Keep the good work going Mr Governor. God bless

Maybe it's because we've been addressing Mr. Sanwo-olu wrongly that's why nothing has been happening. Let's try the 'Mr. Governor' title for the next 45 – 120 working days maybe things will change.

While Seyi Makinde is repairing roads, printing free copies of past questions for schools and basically just working, your Pontius Pilate in Lagos is concerned with being called His Excellency or Mr Governor.

Tragic.
Rather than fixing the roads, flooded areas and traffic. Sanwo-olu is more concerned with his title “Mr governor”. Honestly how did things get to this???♂️??♂️??♂️??♂️

This is commendable but sir, the roads all over Lagos is in bad shape.
No amount of patching will solve it dire state because it will be washed away once it rain.
The entire roads and drainage system in Lagos need overhauling, regrading and expansion. https://t.co/TiI6K8Hgo0
I don't understand the efficacy of this title calling on your performance.
— ENIOLA (@woman__being) November 6, 2019
Don't turn around and say you performed below average because we didn't call you Mr. Governor https://t.co/iRTA8ygmJj
Pls dear Mr Governor @jidesanwoolu residents on the borderline of Lagos and Ogun States are in severe pains, stress and danger. By mapings we are in Lagos State, our roads are horrible. The potholes are so deep they have become scary and detrimental to us. https://t.co/SCQPCTSkq8

The desire to project humility is well noted, but trading exalted titles fails to fulfil this purpose.
A revert to Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu would be more representative of the fellow compatriots you wish to identify with.
If Mr Governor no do this work reach Alimosho I won't be "impressed" at all. https://t.co/wEyH8d94uC

We only care about service.
Roads in deplorable state.
Dirty environment
Please also do something about the menace of Okadas. They are having a field day. Even Marwa needs to be controlled.
Security is very important!
This our governor is now a comedian. What was he called before? Is he not Mr Governor before. Get to work, nobody cares how you are called. You will be remembered for what you do. https://t.co/Vmf1tzvo3u
