NASS Members ‘Notorious’ For Seeking Bribes – Attahiru Jega

Former Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, on Monday, claimed that members of the National Assembly are ‘‘notorious’ for seeking bribes.

Jega said in the name of ‘‘oversight functions’’, chairman of committees in the National Assembly are fond of harassing members of the public, including chief executives of organisations, for bribes before carrying out their expected duties.

The former INEC Chairman, who said this while delivering the 2018 Democracy Day lecture at the International Conference Centre in Abuja, on Monday, stated this at the event which had in attendance President Muhammadu Buhari and the leadership of the National Assembly Senator Bukola Saraki and Hon Yakubu Dogara.

Jega said he has “spoken to quite a number of chief executives who complained of high demand for bribes from members of the National Assembly in the name of so-called oversight functions,’’ adding that “some chairmen of committees at the National Assembly are notorious for seeking for bribes.”

Also present at the 2018 Democracy Day lecture was Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen.
