NERC Threatens To Withdraw Licences Of AEDC, Ikeja Disco Over Poor Remittances

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has said the licences of eight power distribution companies may be withdrawn over their failure to meet their obligated remittances to the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trader (NBET).

In a notice signed by Dafe Akpeneye, the NERC commissioner for legal, on Tuesday, the commission said the DisCos failed to meet up with the expected minimum remittances to NBET for July’s billing cycle.

Following this, NERC directed each of the Discos to show explain in  writing within 60 days  why their licences should not be cancelled in accordance with section 74 of EPSRA.

The affected DisCos include the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company Plc, Benin Electricity Distribution Company Plc, Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc and Ikeja Electric Plc.

Others are Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company Plc, Kano Electricity Distribution Company Plc, Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company Plc and Yola Electricity Distribution Company Plc.

“Take notice that pursuant to section 74 of the EPSR Act and the terms and conditions of electricity distribution licences issued to the distribution licensees by Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has reasonable cause to believe that the Discos listed below have breached the provisions of EPSRA, terms and conditions of their respective distribution licences and the 2016 – 2018 Minor Review of Multi Year Tariff Order and Minimum Remittance Order for the Year 2019,” the notice read.
