New Video Shows Chibok Girls Kidnapped By Boko Haram Are Alive

A video released by Islamist sect Boko Haram appears to show that some of the schoolgirls kidnapped exactly two years ago from the town of Chibok, Borno state are alive.

The video, which is believed to have been filmed in December, was sent to the federal government.

On Wednesday, CNN aired the video, showing 15 girls in black robes identifying themselves as pupils abducted from the school.

The video also showed the mother of one of the abducted girls named Saratu, reaching out to a computer screen as she recognized her daughter.

The woman, who broke down crying, said that Saratu who was 15 years of age when she was kidnapped, is now 17.

Speaking with newsmen, a schoolmate, known as Saa, said she recognized most of the Chibok girls shown in the video.

Saa was among those who escaped and now schools in the United States.

In a statement through the Education Must Continue Initiative, a Washington-based project started by Nigerian Emmanuel Ogede, she said:

“The moment I saw them and recognized their faces — Saratu Ayuba, Jummai Mutah, and Kwazigu Hamman — I started crying, with tears of joy rolling down from my eyes, thanking God for their lives.

“Seeing them gives me the courage to tell the world today that we should not lose hope.

“Let’s keep praying and campaigning for #BringBackOurGirls. I want the world to raise their voice. Let’s not stop until the government hears us and does something about it.”

The Federal Government, however, confirmed that they received the video, but stated that there were still reviewing it.

Minister of information, Lai Mohammed said the government was working effectively to have the girls released.

“They are ongoing talks… We cannot ignore leads…. But many of these negotiations cannot be disclosed because it could also endanger the negotiations,” Mohammed said.
