Only 21% Of 2025 UTME Applicants To Secure Admission Into UNIZIK
Only about 21.37 percent of 51,487 candidates who applied to Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, as their first-choice institution in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) are likely to be admitted.
According to the institution, only 11,000 admission slots are available, indicating that 78.63 per cent of applicants, over 40,000 candidates, are unlikely to get in.
The figures released by the school followed the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB)’s recent data on the 10 most preferred universities in Nigeria, ranked by 2025 UTME First-Choice Applications.
UNIZIK emerged as the 5th most preferred university in Nigeria, with 51,487 UTME candidates, a 5.5 per cent drop from 2024, when 54,495 applied to the school as their first choice.
“As usual, competition remains intense. With just over 11,000 available slots across 112 programmes in 17 faculties, many applicants will not get in.
“The university is expected to release its official admission guidelines in the coming weeks. Candidates and the general public are reminded that admission into Nnamdi Azikiwe University is strictly based on merit.

“Please be cautious: do not engage with anyone claiming to offer admission for money. Avoid fraudsters and admission racketeers,” UNIZIK’s release read late Wednesday.
From 2021 to 2025, UNIZIK has consistently ranked in the top 10 of JAMB’s first-choice preference list.
For 2025, UNIZIK ranked lower than Lagos State University (LASU), which led the applications with 70,080.
The University of Lagos followed with 58,645 applications, the University of Ilorin with 56,758, and finally, the Federal University Oye–Ekiti with 52,108 applications.
Meanwhile, with admission lists expected in the coming months, UNIZIK has advised candidates to monitor official announcements and remain vigilant against scammers.
