Police, Media Adopt Framework On Safety of Journalists

The Nigeria Police Force and media practitioners have adopted a framework on the protection of Journalists in Nigeria in principle.

The adoption was made during a forum which held in Abuja on Thursday.

The motion was moved by Editor of Forefront Magazine, Amos Dunia, and seconded by the police force public relations officer, DSP Frank Mba, ably represented by CSP Ngozi Nwokoma.

Speaking earlier, National Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalist, Chris Isiguzo said the purpose of the forum which is the third in its series is to chart a way forward for the police and the media relationship.

Describing the forum as an “experience sharing meeting,” Isiguzo said ” we cannot fold our hands and be watchun”, we must ensure that our safety is key. The oxygen of democracy s the media. We must not toil with the safety of joirnalists”.

He further recalled meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari and pleading that journalist are protected in the country and beyond.

He urged the police to see Journalists as friends. “we’re nation builders and we’re ready at all times to ensure that we engage on issues that will take us to the next positive level. “

On her own part, CSP Nwokoma assured that the framework will be taken back to the force for further consideration.
