Repair Works On Abuja Airport Runway To Continue For Another 18 Weeks – Presidency

The Presidency disclosed Sunday that ongoing repair works at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja will require additional 18 weeks for upgrade.

In a statement made available to State House correspondents, the extended 18 weeks upgrade work will be carried out at night so as not to obstruct normal flight operations during the day.

Recall that the Abuja Airport was shut down for 6 weeks on March 8, 2017 and expected to be reopened on April 19.

“After the Abuja airport reopens for operations on April 19, upgrade works on the runway would continue for another 18 weeks,” he said.

“This second phase of upgrade works on the runway will be carried out at night, with no disruption to flight schedules.

“The repair is about its mid-point on Wednesday,’’ the statement read.”

The statement added that a media tour to allow reporters observe and assess the progress of work on the airport runway repairs would hold this week.

The presidency also said the Federal Government Coordinating Committee overseeing the repairs of Abuja airport said over 43,000 passengers have passed through the Kaduna airport in its first 11 days of operations.

It said that was more than the 41,000 passengers the Kaduna Airport recorded in the entire first quarter of 2015, and the 21,000 in the first quarter of 2016.

The statement also stated that within this period, about 10,000 passengers took advantage of the free bus shuttle organised by the Federal Government to transport passengers between the Abuja and Kaduna Airports.

The Presidency expressed optimism that the Abuja Airport will reopen as planned after six weeks as work is going according to schedule.
