The senators are aggrieved over the unapproved spending of $496 million by the federal government on the purchase of some fighter jets from the United States.

Buhari had approved the withdrawal of the money from the excess crude account without seeking the consent of the National Assembly.

The President subsequently sent a letter to the Red Chamber which was read on the floor of the senate on Wednesday, a move seen by the lawmakers as rather insulting.

Reacting today, the senators described the President’s decision as an impeachable offence, while calling on other senators to begin the process of impeaching President Buhari.

However, some lawmakers who are believed to be loyal to the president, moved against the call, prompting a mild drama on the floor of the senate.
