SERAP, Other CSOs To Monitor COVID-19 Spending

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), has said it is partnering with other Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in the country to monitor on-ground disbursements of funds across Nigeria.

SERAP stated this on Thursday on its twitter handle while responding to a question by a twitter user, during a tweet meet with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on “Corruption in Emergency Response Situations.”

According to SERAP, the partnership is also in addition to advocacy initiatives with the ICPC and Freedom of Information (FOI) requests to relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) (CBN, NCDC, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Ministry of Health) asking them to publish weekly spending details on the Coronavirus (COVID-19) relief funds and for the authorities to pay people through Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs) and not physical cash payments.

The civil society organisation noted that such move was to promote transparency and accountability and to enable Nigerians to ask necessary questions.

It further noted that it was prepared to go to court if “we do not receive responses to our FoI requests after 7 days.”
