The 266th and current Pope of the Roman Catholic, Pope Francis, has told mothers that they can freely breastfeed their children in church “without fear”.

The Pontiff, who baptized 28 babies in the Sistine Chapel to mark the feast of the Baptism of Jesus Christ, told the congregation during his sermon that Christ’s first sermon was made to the sound of his crying in the stable at Bethlehem.

The Pope urged mothers not to hesitate to breastfeed their babies in church as they could be very vocal due to being in an unfamiliar place or just because they were very hungry.

“The ceremony is a little long, someone’s crying because he’s hungry.

“You mothers, go ahead and breastfeed, without fear. Just like the Virgin Mary nursed Jesus.”

This is not the first time that the Pope has encouraged mothers to feed their babies during mass. He made a similar appeal at the Baptism service in 2015 and in 2014, also in an interview with La Stampa in 2013.
