Olympics: Germany Ends Dream Team’s Hope For Gold

Nigeria’s hopes of winning gold at the men’s football event of the Rio Olympics were dashed on Wednesday night as they suffered a 2-0 defeat semi-final to Germany at the Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Captain Max Meyer opened the scoring for the Europeans in the 9th minute, after latching home a clever pass from Serge Gnabry that exposed the Nigerian defence.

Substitute Niels Petersen grabbed the second goal in the 88th minute to seal victory for the Germans and ultimately end Nigeria’s dream of re-living the Atlanta 96’ feat.

The result means the Germans will play Brazil in the final on Saturday at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

Brazil earlier defeated Honduras 6-0 in the first semi-final clash to secure a place in the final.
