UEFA Champions League Play-Off: Mixed Fortunes For Nigerians

It was mixed reactions for three Nigerians involved in the UEFA Champions League play-offs on Tuesday night.

Nosa Igiebor’s Macabbi Tel Aviv, reached the group stage of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 11 years after playing out a 1-1 draw with Swiss giant Basel with an aggregate score of 3-3.

The Nigerian who was substituted in the 70th minute, saw his side hold on for a hard earned draw and advanced to the group stage courtesy of their better away goals.

However, it was a different story for the other Nigerians involved on the night as Elderson Echiejile’s Monaco was eliminated on the night despite scoring as a late substitute in a 2-1 win over Valencia, the late winner was not enough as they fell 4-3 on aggregate.

Efe Ambrose watched from the bench as his side Celtic lost 2-0 to Malmo.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday night two other Nigerians, Ahmed Musa and Ogenyi Onazi would hope to reach the group stages of the Champions League with their clubs CSKA Moscow of Russia and Lazio FC of Italy respectively.

The group stage draw of the Champions League will take place on Thursday, 27 August, in Monaco, France.
