Four major telecommunication companies operating in the country recorded 22,942 porting activities in January 2020, according to the Nigerian Communications Commision’s (NCC) data.
NCC porting data for mobile network operators details a situation where a mobile number is transferred from one service provider to another on the request of a subscriber wishing to change service provider, while keeping the same mobile number.
According to the NCC, service providers including Airtel, MTN, Globacom and 9mobile lost a total of 11,293 subcribers out of the 22,942 to outgoing (outward) porting.
The commision described outgoing porting as the mobile numbers which leave a service provider for another, while maintaining same numbers.
The NCC further revealed that the remaining 11,649 porting activities were mobile numbers that ported (inward) from another service provider’s network.
9mobile witnessed the highest number of new subscribers totalling 5,516, while it lost 3484 subscribers to other service providers.
Airtel received 3,009 new subscribers, while 3,484 left for other network providers.
