Tinubu Congratulates Mexico’s First Female President Claudia Sheinbaum

President Bola Tinubu has joined world leaders in congratulating Claudia Sheinbaum on her groundbreaking victory in Mexico’s national election as she became the first woman to hold the presidency since the country’s independence in 1821.

Her victory in the election held on Sunday has equally drawn congratulations from global leaders.

Tinubu, in a statement by his spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, noted the global significance of Sheinbaum’s victory in the election.

“Ms. Sheinbaum won the Mexican presidential election by a landslide, becoming the first female President in the country since its independence in 1821.

“President Tinubu states that the election of President-elect Sheinbaum accents the voices of women in government, shatters political glass ceiling, and sends a reverberating message across the world that women must not only be participants but principal architects in shaping and implementing decisions affecting the lives of many,” said Ngelale.

Tinubu also seized the opportunity to call for strengthening bilateral ties between Nigeria and Mexico.

Sheinbaum, representing the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) party, secured the mandate with more than 59 per cent of the vote.

Her victory has resonated far beyond Mexico’s borders. Officials from countries such as Brazil, Chile, and the United States have also offered their congratulations, reflecting the international community’s support for this groundbreaking achievement.

Set to take office on October 1, Sheinbaum will succeed President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the founder of the Morena party.

During her campaign, she pledged to continue and advance Lopez Obrador’s signature policies and leverage their close professional relationship that dates back to 2,000 when he appointed her as his environment secretary in Mexico City’s government.
