UK Elections: Nigerian Wins Parliamentary Seat Again

A Nigerian, Chinyelu Susan Onwurah has been re-elected as member of the British parliament at the UK general elections.

The Labor party politician won Newcastle Central with 21,568 votes, and was the first Member of Parliament to be declared in the country.

Onwurah had emerged victorious at the British general elections in 2010 as Member of Parliament.

She is Newcastle’s first black Member of Parliament.

In October 2016, she was appointed to serve as Shadow Minister for Industrial Strategy, Science and Innovation.

In the UK, shadow ministers are responsible for scrutinizing the policies and actions of the government; they can as well offer alternative programs.

Onwurah’s mother was from Newcastle.
