US Election: EU Abandons Trump, Seeks ‘Transatlantic Agenda’ With Biden

The European Union Commission says that going by the victory of Joe Biden at the November 3 United States Presidential election, it has now formulated a new transatlantic agenda between the EU and the US.

The European Commission, in its statement on Wednesday, sought for a “stronger multilateral action and pursuit of common interests” while observing that the US-EU relations had deteriorated in recent years.

The claims may not be unconnected to the decision of President Donald Trump to withdraw the US from the Paris Climate Change Agreement and the World Health Organization(WHO), of which the EU is a central actor.

It noted that the commission believes that joining forces with the US will lead to the betterment of the world.

“The European Commission and the High Representative are today putting forward a proposal for a new, forward-looking transatlantic agenda. While the past years have been tested by geopolitical power shifts, bilateral tensions and unilateral tendencies, the victory of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris, combined with a more assertive and capable European Union and a new geopolitical and economic reality, present a once-in-a-generation opportunity to design a new transatlantic agenda for global cooperation based on our common values, interests and global influence,” it stated.

On her part, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stressed that “it is time to reconnect with a new agenda for transatlantic and global cooperation for the world of today.”

Furthermore, the EU High Representative/Vice-President, Josep Borrell, said that the Biden administration should consider the proposal as a window of opportunity for a stronger relation.

“With our concrete proposals for cooperation under the future Biden administration, we are sending strong messages to our US friends and allies. Let’s look forward, not back.

“Let’s rejuvenate our relationship. Let’s build a partnership that delivers prosperity, stability, peace and security for citizens across our continents and around the world. There’s no time to wait – let’s get to work,” he said.

Meanwhile, ahead of the January 20 inauguration, the US presidential election is still undergoing certifications across various states and multiple lawsuits have been filed by the Trump campaign, which has continued to allege electoral fraud without evidence.
