White House communications director Mike Dubke has resigned, just three months after assuming office.

The move is the first in what could be a series of White House staff shake-up amid the lingering Russian scandal.

Dubke, an experienced Republican strategist, tendered his resignation May 18. He offered to stay on to help manage communications in Washington during Trump’s foreign trip, and the president accepted.

“He has expressed his desire to leave the White House and made very clear that he would see through the president’s international trip,” White House adviser Kellyanne Conway told Fox News.

Dubke’s resignation was first reported by Mike Allen of Axios in his Tuesday morning newsletter.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer will reportedly hold on to his position, until President Trump appoints a replacement, the BBC reports.

In an email to friends and associates on Tuesday morning, Dubke wrote: “It has been my great honor to serve President Trump and this administration. It has also been my distinct pleasure to work side-by-side, day-by-day with the staff of the communications and press departments.”

The reshuffle follows widespread criticism of the White House communications team.

President Trump and many senior officials in the White House are reportedly frustrated with the communications team for not being able to properly handle the growing Russian scandal and in particular firing of former FBI Director, James Comey.

The White House is yet to name a successor for Mr Dubke.
