Why FG Wants To Redesign 2nd Niger Bridge

The federal controller of works in Anambra, Adeyemo Ajani, says the second Niger Bridge may be redesigned to prevent suicide attempts.

This was disclosed by the controller during an inspection of the on-going project at the Ogbaru site of the project by the Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE).

According to the society branch Chairman, Chinasaokwu Okoli, the society during the inspection, recommended a suicide-proof design of the pedestrian walkways of the bridge to prevent suicide cases on completion of the bridge.

Ajani, however, responded to Okoli saying he would convey the society’s recommendation on the project to the appropriate authorities.

“What we have on the walk lane is our standard design. What the engineers are talking about is a kind of review, but what we have now is 1.1 meters which is the design.

“If we have to do abnormal design to take care of suicidal situations, it will require another design.

“There has been rapid progress on the project. The last time the minister and the vice president came, it was 15 percent level completion but today, it is above 21percent.

“When you look at it from the time the project started, we are now at 24 per cent completion. The main bridge has begun. We have done all the piling and the structures above water level have been done considerably.”

The project, to be completed by February 2022, is a Federal Government Project, managed by the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing in collaboration with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority.
