Why I Picked Dancing Over Aeronautical Engineering – Kaffy

Nigerian dancer, choreographer and dance instructor, Kafayat Oluwatoyin Shafau, popularly known by her stage name Kaffy has revealed why she picked a career in dance over Aeronautical Engineering.

The fitness coach opened up on her transition during a recent dialogue with youths at a conference tagged “UNMASKED” hosted by Live Your Dreams Africa, a non-governmental organisation in M&M centre, Abuja.

Growing up with the dream of becoming an Aeronautical Engineer, Kaffy stated that she had never in time past thought dancing would be the career to bring her to lime light.

“For me, dance has never always been what I would have thought would put me on this platform. I had always wanted to be an Aeronautic Engineer; I loved science and Math so much, in fact, the harder the maths the more I fell in love.

“So why I was planning to be an Engineer was because I said I want to do something that will shake humanity coupled with the fact that they were no female aeronautics engineer at that time.

“But my aspiration as an Engineer never changed because I dived into dance but I was more inspired at how much I can give back to humanity as a dancer so life just happened,” she said.

Expatiating on her success story, Kaffy said, “My conviction of dancing was not that I’m going to “dance dance,” but because I want to convince people that you cannot box success and say it only happens for engineers, doctors or lawyers.

“That was why I was such a rebel against boxing the success of human being. Jesus was a son of a carpenter but he is a king of a kingdom.”

She urged youths never to create excuses for why they are not great, as it is an insult to God.

In a time when dancing was not regarded as a lucrative career, Kaffy paid her dues in the entertainment industry and has become arguably Africa’s greatest dance queen.

The young mother of two is best known for breaking the Guinness World Record for “Longest Dance Party” at the Nokia Silverbird Danceathon in 2006, and also the founder and owner of Imagneto Dance Company.
