16 Dead, 17 Injured In Multiple-Car Accident On Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), on Tuesday, confirmed that no fewer than 16 people lost their lives in multiple car accidents which also left 17 others with varying degrees of injuries along the Ojoo-Iwo axis of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

The FRSC Oyo State Sector Command’s spokesperson, Mr Mayowa Odewo, disclosed that the crash involved 35 people, including 14 male adults, 10 female adults, six female children, and five male children.

Only two of the passengers were unhurt.

Odewo stated that the accident involved four vehicles — a Mack truck with registration number AKM 548 ZY, a Nissan commercial bus (MUB 20 LG), a Nissan Micra taxi (BDJ 520 YC), and a private Honda Accord SUV (KRD 707 ER).

According to him, the crash was caused by the brake failure of the Mack truck, which led to a chain reaction among the other vehicles.

Following the accident, the 17 injured victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were handed over to the police.

Odewo said that the vehicles involved have been towed to the Irepodun Police Station along Agbowo-Ojoo Road for further investigation.

“The accident vehicles have been taken to Irepodun Police Station, along Agbowo-Ojoo Road, by the police.

“Sadly, no victim was saved by seat belts or other defensive gadgets,” he said.

Odewo lamented the lack of safety measures, and noted that none of the victims had been protected by seat belts or other defensive gadgets. He urged drivers to exercise more caution and ensure proper maintenance of their vehicles to prevent such devastating accidents in the future.

He also stressed the importance of road safety measures, particularly on high-traffic routes like the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, where accidents are all too common.
