ABUJA: #EndSARS Protesters Write IGP, Seeks Adequate Police Protection On October 20

A number of stakeholders have formally requested for adequate protection from the Nigeria Police Force on October 20 by 10 am during the #EndSARS anniversary protest at the Unity fountain, Abuja.

This was captured in a letter written by the Falana & Falana Chambers to the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, at the Force Headquarters.

Marshall Abubakar, the lawyer for the protesters, stated in the letter that a number of compatriots had resolved to hold an event at the venue in commemoration of the #EndSARS – a protest staged last year October in widespread condemnation of the human rights violation by some security operatives.

He added that it was needful to seek police protection because of the possibility of the event being hijacked.

“Mindful of attempts to hijack similar events in the past, we hereby notify the police and request for adequate police protection at the venue of the event in accordance with Section 83 (4) of the Police Establishment Act, 2020, “the letter partly read.

As seen by our correspondent, the letter was acknowledged with a police seal on October 18.

Recall that the protest made some gains last year which led to the federal government dissolving the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The government also approved the constitution of a panel of enquiry into alleged police brutality.

However, unsavory incident trailed the protests resulting in reported deaths on the side of protesters and security agents.
