Accidental Discharge Kills Police DPO In Cross River

An accidental discharge has resulted in th’e death of a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Obudu division of Cross River State, Gabriel Amawu.

This was confirmed by the state Police Command through its Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo.

Ugbo, who said Amawu’s death was as a result of “accidental discharge”, did not however, give details of the incident.

According to the police spokesperson,
an investigation has commenced to unravel what was responsible.

Students of the Federal College of Education Obudu were said to have protested on Tuesday evening, leading to the arrest of some of them by the police.

However, other students were also said to have taken their protest to the police station where the late Amawu was the DPO.

He was said to have shot into the air repeatedly to disperse the protesting students before the bullet of one of the guns he held accidentally discharged and killed him.

The late DPO was a Deputy Superintendent of Police from Obudu Local Government Area where Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River hails from.
