African Games: Nigeria’s Umoafia Wins Three Gold Medals In Weightlifting, Falconets Book Semi Final Place

Edidiong Umoafia produced a stunning performance with three gold medals in the weightlifting event of the African Games in Ghana on Monday.

Umoafia, who was participating in the 67kg category for the first time, finished as the overall best with 135kg snatch and 165kg clean and jerk for a total of 300kg.

The 22-year-old showed impressive strength in all three disciplines: snatch, clean & jerk, and total to win three gold medals for Nigeria.

Team Nigeria can now boast of 10 gold medals across three sports, Badminton, Wrestling and Weightlifting.

Similarly, another Nigerian weightlifter, Florence Olarinoye also won three gold medals in the women’s weightlifting 55kg category with a total of 185kg.

In the football category of the games, The Flying Eagles earned a 1-0 win over South Sudan to keep their qualifications hope on track after losing the first match to Uganda.

Sadiq Isiyaka scored the only goal of the encounter from the spot in the second half to hand Ladan Bosso’s men the maximum points.

The Flying Eagles need a positive result against Senegal in their last group game on Friday to pick a semi final ticket.

The Falconets defeated Senegal 4-0 to book a semi final place in the football event of the games thanks to goals from Loveth Edeh, Motunrayo Ezekiel, Chioma Olise and an own goal from a Senegalese player.
