Borno Youth Write Tinubu, Demand Unconditional Release Of Abba Kyari

The Borno State Youth Forum (BSYF) has written a passionate letter to President Bola Tinubu, urging the unconditional release of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abba Kyari.

Kyari, who is from Borno State, is facing trial over alleged tampering of drugs seized from drug traffickers in Enugu by IRT officers and thereafter transferred the Drug Suspects and drugs as exhibits to the NDLEA. He has since denied the allegations, pleading not guilty.

In a letter signed by the forum’s Chairman, Ibrahim Umar, and Secretary, Alhaji Modu Bukar, the group appealed to the president to recognize Kyari’s “unprecedented sacrifices and contributions to national security” and reinstate him to active duty in the interest of peace and justice.

“We, the entire members of this forum, are appealing to you Mr. President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to come to our aid and release DCP Abba Kyari unconditionally,” the letter obtained by THE WHISTLER read.

“The government should recognize the outstanding and unprecedented service achievements recorded by DCP Abba Kyari when he was the Commander of the IGP Intelligence Response Team and when he served in Lagos State.”

The forum lauded Kyari’s role in counterterrorism efforts in the Northeast, claiming that he and his team were instrumental in curbing Boko Haram suicide bombings in Borno State and dismantling terror cells across the country.

“Even here in Borno State, he and his team ended all the Boko Haram terrorist suicide bombings by arresting over 130 commanders and destroying their bomb-making factories.

“He was the only officer who arrested those involved in the Chibok schoolgirls’ kidnapping in 2014,” the letter continued.

The group also highlighted Kyari’s role in the arrest of several notorious criminals across Nigeria, including Evans, Godogodo, Vampire, and Dogo Russia, among others. According to the BSYF, his actions brought relative peace to many parts of the country plagued by insecurity.

The letter listed several awards allegedly received by Kyari during his career including Triple IGP Medals for Courage (2012–2014), Commendation from the FBI (2018), Presidential Medal for Courage (2016) and National Assembly Award for Outstanding Service (2020).

“DCP Abba Kyari’s contributions to Nigeria and Nigerians are uncountable, which easily erases whatever kind of trivial allegation against him,” the group argued.

“The weight of his contributions to national security is a thousand times more than the false and malicious allegations leveled against him.”

The BSYF described the case as a “clear malicious setup driven by envy and personal vendetta” and called on President Tinubu to show “compassion and leadership” by granting him freedom.

“The forum is appealing and pleading to Mr. President to release DCP Abba Kyari unconditionally and call him back to his official duties in the interest of peace, justice, and national security,” the statement concluded.
