World Poverty Clock had reported that Nigeria is the world’s poverty capital after it overtook India.

The Vienna-based Non-governmental Organisation said Nigeria has 86.9 million poor people compared to 71.5 million in India.

In May 2020, the National Bureau of Statistics said 83 million people live below the country’s poverty line of 137,430 naira ($381.75) per year.

The President confirmed Nigeria as world poverty capital during a monitored interview on Arise TV on Thursday. This was despite a series of denials by his government.

He said, “I think we have a problem of unemployment. We have a problem of a lot of youths looking basically for what to eat, not even to talk of accommodation . The level of poverty is almost unimaginable.

“This is our problem, but those who are really keeping in touch with what we are doing know the difference between the time we came in and now.”

The country’s unemployment is worsening with the latest rate placed at 33.3 per cent or over 23 million.

Prior to when he assumed office in 2015, the country’s unemployment level was  9.9 per cent in July which is 7.5 million.

The numbers surged from 18.8 per cent ( 68.4 million) in the third quarter of 2017 to 23.1 per cent in the third quarter of 2018.
