Buhari, Jonathan, Jega Meet Thursday In Abuja

The key players in the 2015 presidential elections, President Muhammadu Buhari, ex-president Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and former INEC chairman Prof Attahiru Jega, are set to converge in Abuja on Thursday at the 2016 LEADERSHIP Annual Awards.

The trio will be named 2015 Persons Of The Year at the event in the aftermath of the key roles they played to salvage Nigeria’s democracy during the historic 2015 presidential elections.

Their convergence at the annual event will, perhaps, make it the first time that the trio will be meeting under one roof since the 2015 general elections.

The event tagged “Democracy, Political Transition and the Challenge of Leadership in Africa”, organised by Leadership Newspapers, will be chaired by former head of state General Abdulsalam Abubakar.

The LEADERSHIP Newspaper editorial team in a statement said, “It was not an easy decision for the Board of Editors of LEADERSHIP who voted for the trio. The choice of President Buhari was made to honour him for making history by being the first opposition candidate to defeat a sitting president after three attempts. In the case of former President Jonathan, he would be recognised for achieving the improbable and for conceding defeat in an election in which he was a contestant – a first for Nigeria.

“The former INEC boss is to be honoured for his courage, doggedness and fairness even in the face of threats to his life in the conduct of the 2015 elections, a feat he achieved to global acclaim.”
