“Today I want to send a personal and sincere thank you to every health worker around the world especially nurses and midwives who we are celebrating this year through the international year of the nurse and the midwives,” Tedros said.

He added that if not for the role they are playing in various countries, the health menace would have been almost uncontrollable.

He also said that the health organization admired and respected their passion to safeguard lives.

“We know you do a hell of job and we know that this crisis is putting a huge burden on you and your families and we know that you are stretching to the limits,” he said.

Furthermore, he said that people should not forget that there are many health-related cases to deal with apart from covid-19, adding that the society should continue to seek the services of health officials.

“Even though covid- 19 has captured the world’s attention, there are still many other health issues that people continue to face every single day and that WHO has continued to work on.

“Babies are still being born, essential surgeries are continuing, people still need emergency care after road traffic crash; people still need treatment from cancer, diabetes, HIV, cancer, and for all of these, we need health workers,” he said.

Also, he reaffirmed that coronavirus, being a global pandemic, should not be toyed with  by any government, adding that nations should abide by the health guidelines outlined by WHO, for the safety of communities.

“Our message to countries is that you must take comprehensive action; not testing alone, not contact tracing alone, not quarantine alone, not social distancing alone; do it all,” he added.

He also said that Europe has now become the epicenter of the pandemic, with more cases than the rest of the world combined apart from China.

“More than 132000 cases of covid-19 have now been reported to WHO from 123 countries and territories and 5000 people have lost their lives, – a tragic milestone.
