Deputy Senate President Swears In Yohanna As Abbo’s Replacement For Adamawa North

The Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, on Wednesday, swore in Amos Yohanna as the new Senator representing Adamawa North Senatorial District replacing Elisha Abbo.

The member of the Peoples Democratic Party was last week declared the winner of the February 25 Senatorial Election by the Appeal Court.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja had sacked Abbo, a member of the All Progressives Congress in a judgement delivered by Justice C.E. Nwosu-Iheme, who headed the three-member panel.

The court ordered for an immediate withdrawal of the certificate of return issued to Abbo by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and the same be issued to Yohanna.

Abbo had earlier had his election affirmed by the tribunal.

Although the tribunal had declared that Yohanna’s case lacked merit, the Appellate Court said that based on Section 137 of the Electoral Act, 2022, the results tendered clearly showed that there was no compliance with the constitution and the Electoral Act.

After the Appellate Court had deducted votes from both parties, it ruled that legitimate votes showed the PDP candidate scored the highest and met the requirement of the law and was returned elected.

Abbo who has frequently courted controversy had blamed Senate President Godswill Akpabio as the brain behind his removal in a press conference he held in Abuja.

He further alleged that Akpabio was aiming to induce the court to sack four senators including Abia Senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, whose case is before the Court of Appeal in Lagos.

He however apologised and absolved Akpabio of any complicity 24 hours later.
