EndSARS Protesters In Awka Demand Whereabouts Of Missing Youths, Block Highway To Onitsha

Motorists plying Enugu-Onitsha expressway, Wednesday, groaned as #EndSARS protesters blocked the road as they demanded the whereabouts of alleged missing youths in SARS custodies. The blockade paralysed vehicular and economic activities in the area for some hours.

The protesters marched through major streets, and eventually converged on the Aroma junction by the Onitsha-Enugu expressway. They danced and recited names of about 15 youths who had allegedly died or were missing as a result of the brutalities of SARS operatives in the state.

Uche Okoye, who spoke for the protesters, said although the protest was suspended in the state through a statement from the Ohanaeze Youth Wing of the state, the youths were protesting to compel the police IG to ensure that the perpetrators of the alleged killings were brought to book, and those still in SARS detentions were charged to court or released.

THE WHISTLER reports that the protesters also blocked the entrance of the Government House, Awka, to press home their demands.

A commercial driver, Nkem Ugwu, told our correspondent that he spent about three hours as a result of the blockade. He said, “It was generally peaceful as they were monitored by security operatives who comported themselves. Let the IGP explain to the youths the whereabouts of some alleged missing youths in SARS custodies to prove the sincerity in this ban.”
