#EndSARS: SERAP Seeks International Inquiry Into ‘Lekki Massacre’, Others

The Socio-economic Rights and Accountability Project(SERAP) has urged the United Nations Human Rights Office in Geneva to set up an international panel of inquiry to look into the violence associated with the EndSARS protests in Nigeria.

SERAP also maintained that an international support was needed to unravel what actually transpired at the Lekki Toll Plaza, Lagos State.

“BREAKING: We urge @mbachelet @UNHumanRights to support and lead a process to establish a UN-AU international commission of inquiry to probe what exactly happened in Lekki shooting, attacks on #EndSARS peaceful protesters, the killings, looting and destruction of property in Nigeria,” SERAP tweeted on Wednesday.

Recall that the federal government had directed states to set up a judicial panel of inquiry so as to set the tone for addressing the anomalies linked to some officials of security agencies.

But, SERAP argued that for an unbiased inquiry to happen, an independent probe was needed.

It stated that an international coalition of investigators would engender transparency in the process.

“A robust international investigative mechanism would help to identify those responsible, preserve evidence for use in future criminal proceedings, bring an end to the cycle of impunity in Nigeria, and establish a measure of accountability,” it stated.
