Enugu Village Head Seeks Divine Interventions For His People To Get Potable Water

Mr Fidelis Nnaji , the eldest man in Ishiakpu/Ugwuezegwu village in Eha-Etiti, Nsukka East Development Centre of Enugu State, Thursday, sought divine interventions towards potable water for his people.

Elder Nnaji, in an interview with THE WHISTLER, said his people “trek over three kilometres to access potable water.”

He said, “Our greatest problem is lack of potable water. We are just living as an abandoned people. Every day, I appease our ancestors to send our demand to governments to provide us water.

“Our only source of water takes over four hours’ journey to get there. We fetch water in wheelbarrows. Recently, cattle grazers have begun to spoil the water. It is called vava, a spring water.

“We beg the government to come to our help. We don’t have any health centre. We don’t have any secondary school. Our people are simply in danger. Our people are currently migrating out of this village because of absence of basic social amenities, but water is the greatest problem.”

According to him, the village houses over 2, 000 persons. In his words, “The alternative source of water is underground reservoirs the rich among us build. But snakes and other rodents have found such wells a place for habitation.

“This also endangers our lives because such water won’t be hygienic, aside the dangers of being bitten by poisonous creatures.”

The chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, Mr Cosmas Ugwueze, has not reacted to the matter as at the time of filing this report.
