A 32 -year- old mini bus driver, Mayowa Adekunle, has been ordered to be remanded in the Correctional Centre , Ilesa for deliberately burning his own child skin with lighted cigarette.
The accused person was arraigned before the Chief Magistrate, Modupe Awodele, on Tuesday by the police following his arrest.
Cigarette burns can be seen all over the body of the baby.
The police prosecutor, Abiodun Fagboyinbo, told the court that the accused person, ” Adeyemo Mayowa Adekunle ‘m’ on the 24th day of May, 2020 at about 1:30pm at Okinni Area, Osogbo in the Osogbo Magisterial District did assault one Kukute M. age one year and six months by beating him with stick and lighted cigarette to the extent that he has burns all over his body and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 355 of the Criminal Code Cap 34, Vol. II. Laws of Osun State Nigeria 2002.
“That you Adeyemo Mayowa Adekunle ‘m’ on same day, time and place in the aforementioned Magisterial District did exploit a child and prejudicial to the welfare of the child and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 33(1)(2) of the Child Rights Law of Osun State Nigeria 2003.”
The accused person who pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him however said he was under a spell.
He told the court that spiritualists from whom he sought help told him that his mother cast the spell on him.
Adekunle said he married five wives including a pastor’s daughter just to ensure his deliverance from the spell but there was no change in his behaviour.
Having listened to his plea, the magistrate ordered that he should be remanded in the Correctional Centre, Ilesa and adjourned the case to July 14.
