FG Urges States To Adopt, Implement NSSEC Four-Year Strategic Plan

To ensure improved secondary school education in the country, the Federal Government has urged state governments to adopt and implement the National Senior Secondary Education Commission(NSSEC) Strategic Plan (2024-2027) for Secondary Education in Nigeria when unveiled.

The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman stated this during the validation of the Draft Minimum Standards for Senior Secondary Education in Nigeria and Critique of the Draft National Strategic Plan 2024 -2027 for the Senior Secondary Education Sector.

The Minister noted that the Strategic Plan which was developed for the Commission in line with the Ministerial Deliverables, will serve as a road map for the development of Senior Secondary Education In Nigeria.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President has placed much priority in the education sector. The evidence in the huge allocation to the education sector in the 2024 Appropriation Act. In line with the development, the Federal Ministry of Education has developed a Roadmap for the development of the entire education sector.

“It is on the note that I want to call on the state government through the Commissioners of Education from the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to prioritize education especially the basic and senior secondary education by adopting the RoapMap for the improvement of the sector,” he said.

He also urged the commissioners and stakeholders to make meaningful contributions to the two documents and take ownership knowing fully well that the implementation of the contents rests majorly with the state governments.

Speaking while welcoming the stakeholders to the meeting, the Executive Secretary of NSSEC, Dr. Iyela Ajayi disclosed that the Federal Government established the Commission in 2021 as a regulatory and intervention agency for all aspects of senior secondary education and TVET in Nigeria in order to reposition the senior secondary education in Nigeria.

Ajayi noted that draft Minimum Standards document has gone through different stages of preparation, adding that after the validation of the document, it will be forwarded to the next meetings of the Joint Consultative Committee on Education (JCCE) and finally to the National Council on Education (NCE) for consideration and final approval later this year.

He stated that when the final approval is given for the document, it will be mandatory for all the Public and Private senior secondary schools in Nigeria to implement it as it will define a benchmark for all aspects of senior secondary education in the country.
