Flags Lowered In Access Bank Branches To Mourn Death Of Wigwe, Others

A somber mood enveloped Access Bank branches in Abia State today as employees mourned the sudden passing of the Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holding Plc, Herbert Wigwe, and four others in a helicopter crash last weekend.

Wigwe, along with his wife Chizoba, their son, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, and two pilots, died in the aviation accident in the United States. News of their deaths, confirmed by both Access Bank management and U.S. aviation authorities, has left a deep void within the bank and the Nigerian financial community.

As a mark of respect, Access Bank lowered its corporate flags to half-mast across all branches in Abia State. THE WHISTLER’s visit to various branches, including those at the Abia State government house, Umuahia, Isi Gate, and Library Avenue, confirmed the lowered flags.

Similar scenes unfolded at the Timber Shed branch in Umuahia and the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike branch in Ikwuano LGA.

Staff members, dressed in black mourning attire, gathered in hushed groups, lamenting the loss of their leader and discussing the bank’s future in the wake of this tragedy.

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State expressed his deep sorrow, calling the incident “a big blow and one of the saddest moments in my life.” He extended his condolences to the bereaved families and the entire Access Bank community.
