Fresh Attack In Niger State Claims 21 Lives, 40 Abducted

Communities in Shiroro Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State have again witnessed an attack by bandits, who invaded their villages and killed 21 persons.

According to reports, 40 persons were also kidnapped in the recent attack in the early hours of Tuesday.

About 300 gunmen were said to have arrived communities comprising: Kurege, Sabon Gida, Sarai and Rafin Kanya shooting sporadically, The Punch reports.

Confirming the event, the Secretary to the Niger State Government, Ahmed Ibrahim, said the government was making effort to contain the recent spate of insecurity in the state.

He, however, could not give exact figure of people killed.

Although residents expressed fears over banditry which had taken over their communities, they pleaded with government at all levels to come to their aid.

On January 28, gunmen had abducted over 50 persons in Shiroro LGA. This website reported that the bandits stormed the area in large numbers on motorcycles.
