Grass-Cutting Scandal: EFCC Lawyer Fails To Bring Witnesses At Trial Of Ex-SGF, Babachir Lawal

Counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) apologized on Thursday, to the judge at a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, for failing to present more witnesses in the trial of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) , Babachir Lawal.

“It is regrettable that none of my witnesses is in court for this trial, I wish to apologize for this and I humbly urge this honourable court to give me another adjournment,” EFCC counsel, Ofem Uket said, as cited by The Cable.

The EFCC is prosecuting the former SGF and six others for an alleged grass-cutting scandal to the tune of N544.1 million.

Justice Jude Okeke’ presided over the matter.

THE WHISTLER had reported how the EFCC counsel had told the court that witnesses from the office of SGF were trying to make the trial unsuccessful.

One of the witnesses had testified that certain contracts awarded followed due process.

The Cable reported that Akin Olujinmi, counsel to Lawal, did not object to the application for an adjournment.

The judge adjourned till June 16 and 20 for the continuation of trial.
