Enugu metropolis and its environs remained peaceful despite the protest across the federation to mark the June 12 aborted presidential election.

A survey across the state showed that everywhere was calm, with the residents going about their normal businesses.

A trader, Hyginus Nnamchi, said the country has had enough of troubles, and everybody should be cautious not to ignite more tension.

In his words, “We already had enough of catastrophes. So, I personally did not expect any protest in this part of the country.

“It’s a pity we experienced violence of late, but that would be enough.”

An activist, Comrade Cyril Omeje, said, “Southeast generally is the epicentre of peace in Nigeria. The recent skirmishes are reactions to deliberate efforts to marginalise us.

“An average Igbo man is peaceful because he is always planning for tomorrow. I pray the lessons of the past are learnt.”

A pastor, Mr Michael Nnaji, who lives at Nsukka, said, “We preached to our people to avoid the protest. This is because it may start peacefully, and escalate beyond proportions. We experienced such during the #EndSARS where it was hijacked.”

A youth leader at Obollo-Afor, Ikenna Odo, said, “We are becoming very careful because military men are told to shoot at sight. But generally, nobody is ready to destroy anything here.

“Again, reported destruction of public facilities and ugly encounters with security operatives were masterminded by people who are unknown to us. We appeal to the president not to generalise such acts because we deserve justice as Ndigbo.”
