JUST IN: Israel To Pardon Citizens Who Incurred Debts Due To Covid-19

The Israeli Government says due to the economic hardship associated with the Covid-19 pandemic, it will pardon citizens who incurred debts during the period.

It disclosed this in a statement published on its website on Tuesday.

The President of the State of Israel, Reuben Rivlin, also tweeted that it’s “a special pardon process for those who owe fines and are in financial difficulties because of #coronavirus.”

“At a time like this, the State of Israel must help those who need it and are fighting for their lives financially,” he stated.

According to the statement, the pardon only covered citizens who complied with the Covid-19 health advisories.

“It should be emphasized that the outline will not examine requests for relief from fines imposed for violating the provisions to prevent the spread of the corona, but only requests for relief from other fines for those whose economic situation has deteriorated due to the struggle in the corona,” it stated.

However, the government noted that the pardon would only be implemented for those who applied for it.

“As in previous outlines promoted by the President, this time too there will be no sweeping general pardon.

“The pardons will be granted only following the submission of a pardon application and the consideration of each case on its own merits, after receiving an opinion from the competent bodies following the submission of an orderly pardon application,” it stated.

Recall that the nation had on September 18 entered a second round of national lockdown as a result of the surge in Covid-19 cases.

“It could be that we will have no choice but to make the directives more stringent.

“I will not impose a lockdown on the citizens of Israel for no reason, and I will not hesitate to add further restrictions if it is necessary,” Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had said.
