Kano Assembly Advances Legislation For Mandatory Pre-Marital Health Screenings

The Kano State House of Assembly has approved the second reading of a bill that proposes mandatory pre-marital screenings for HIV, hepatitis, and sickle cell.

Musa Ali Kachako, the bill’s sponsor, emphasized the critical need for these screenings, citing the state’s ongoing health challenges.

Kachako, representing the Takai constituency, argued that the lack of medical screenings before marriage has contributed to health issues, particularly the spread of diseases like HIV.

He expressed confidence that implementing this bill into law would not only save lives but also help contain the transmission of life-threatening illnesses.

Aminu Saad, a member representing the Ungogo constituency, highlighted the proactive measures taken by neighbouring states such as Jigawa, Katsina, and Kaduna, where similar bills have been passed to address healthcare challenges.

Saad stressed that, given Kano’s status as the most populous state in the country, passing the bill is crucial to protecting citizens’ health and preventing diseases like hepatitis.

After the bill successfully passed the second reading, the Speaker, Ismail Falgore, referred it to the health committee for further legislative scrutiny.

The committee is expected to conduct a thorough review and report back to the house within four weeks, which is a step closer to potentially enacting the health-focused legislation in Kano State.
