Kano Assembly Elects New Speaker As 13 Legislators Plan Defection To PDP

Hamisu Chidara, the member representing Makoda Constituency has been elected Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly. .This followed the early morning resignation of the former speaker, Abdulaziz Gafasa, on Tuesday.

Sources told THE WHISTLER that Gafasa had been holding meetings with the leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state and his resignation was to pre-empt his removal by lawmakers supporting Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

The Majority Leader of the state assembly,Labaran Madari, representing Warawa constituency also resigned along with Gafasa.

Top sources close to the state legislature confided in THE WHISTLER that Gafasa along with the former majority leader and 12 other legislators may soon decamp to the PDP, a development that is sure to re-ignite the rivalry between Governor Ganduje and his predecessor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, who is leading the main opposition party in the state.

There are only 10 members of the PDP in the state assembly of 40 legislators with the All Progressive Congress holding 30 seats.

“The former speaker resigned so that they will not sack him. He and 13 others have already decided to cross to the PDP and that will happen very soon,” the source said.
