‘Kano Will Be Safe,’ Police Assure Residents After Arrest Of 500 Thugs

KANO State Police Command has assured residents of the state not to leave as everything was in place to make the election violence-free, even as it arrested no fewer than 500 political thugs (Yandabas) in different parts of the state for various electoral offences.

The Command also confirmed that a total of 20,000 security operatives have been deployed in all the 44 local government areas of the State to provide security during Saturday’s election.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Muhammad Wakili, disclosed this on Friday when speaking with pressmen.

The security personnel deployed for the election include 15,000 policemen and 5000 officers from sister security agencies.

According to him, the arrested political thugs, he revealed were picked up from various hideouts and black spots in the state for being in possession of dangerous weapons and stolen handsets.

The Commissioner of Police stated that ‘dangerous weapons’ would not be allowed within the
voting centers, and warned that anyone caught would be dealt with.

He asked politicians and Speaking on contestants to prevail on their followers to play by the
rules while urging the people to come out en mass and cast their votes
in a peaceful manner.

Speaking on those arrested, he said: “They actually broke the law, they were moving about, attacking people, brandishing weapons, snatching handsets from people with knives- which if we look at it properly , you call it armed robbery”

He disclosed that they would be charged to court.

The assurance is against reports that people are leaving the state in droves for fear of election violence.
