Lionel Messi Beats Van Dijk, Ronaldo To Win Sixth Ballon D’Or Award

Lionel Messi has won his sixth Ballon d’Or prize at the 64th celebration of the annual football award presented by France football. 

Messi won the men’s Ballon d’Or category at the event that was held on Monday at the  Theartre du Chatelet in Paris.

Messi becomes the only player to have won it six times in football history.

Van Dijk, who was named as the runner up, would have been the first Liverpool player to win the trophy since Michael Owen won in 2001 and first defender to win it since 2006.

The 2018 Ballon d’Or award was won by Luca Modric of Real Madrid. He was the first Croatian to lift the trophy.

 Meanwhile, Megan Rapinoe won the 2019 women’s Ballon d’Or and becomes the second in history to win the female category of the  award.
