Argentine forward, Lionel Messi has signed a contract extension with Barcelona, that will keep him at the Camp Nou till 2012, the Spanish club said on Saturday.

The development makes official an agreement reached by both parties in the summer.

Barcelona had earlier announced that Messi agreed in July to commit his future to the club, but was yet to put pen to paper on the new deal, with his current contract set to expire in the summer of 2018.

According to the club, Messi’s new buyout clause is now 700 million euros.

“FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi signed on Saturday morning a new contract that will keep the Argentinian superstar at the club through the 2020/21 season,” a club statement read.

“Messi has a lot more to give, which is music to the ears of all Barca fans who will get to continue marvelling at his greatness.”

Club president Josep Maria Bartomeu said, “We are in luck with the Barça players. We continue to enjoy the best player in the history of football.”

Since joining the club at the age of 13, Messi has helped Barcelona win eight Spanish league titles and won the Champions League four times. He has also scored 523 goals in 602 appearances.

He was presented with his fourth European Golden Shoe on Friday after scoring 37 times in the Spanish league last season.
