Nnamdi Kanu ‘Mocks’ Nigerian Courts After Treason Trial Shifted To March 30

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra, was not impressed when a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja postponed his treason trial without informing his lawyer who had come to the court for hearing.

Counsel for Kanu, Nnaemeka Ejiofor, on Wednesday, revealed his discussion with the IPOB leader after the adjournment, when he spoke to THE WHISTLER.

“He is not happy; everybody is complaining about the waste, inconvenience and the risk.

“When we called him (Kanu), he said, you see… Nigerian courts… That if it were where they are , there is no way you will bring lawyers out and the court won’t sit…unless if that emergency happened that morning; but if it happened yesterday at least by now all lawyers should be put on notice that the court won’t sit.”

Ejiofor and the prosecution lawyer were in court for the continuation of the trial of Kanu and others but they were told that the court would not be sitting.

Reason giving by the court official was that the judge “is indisposed…she will not be able to seat”.

Based on the development, they had to take another date for the trial.

THE WHISTLER reported that the Justice Binta Nyako court had on November 26 adjourned trial till today (Wednesday), January 27.

The federal government had instituted charges bordering on treason against the IPOB Nnamdi Kanu and other defendants.

Recall that on the last date of trial(November 26), Kanu’s counsel was absent from court, saying (through a letter to the court) that he was not notified in good time.

Justice Nyako had frowned on him, saying the court might fine Kanu’s lawyer at the conclusion of the trial.

Speaking with THE WHISTLER after they took the new date, Ejiofor said he was informed that the court was in a sad mood over the recent death of one of the judges, adding that “on that basis the court did not sit.”

However, he argued that Kanu and other defendants ( in separate associated cases) were not happy with the shift in dates.

He also said that he should have been notified ahead of time that the court would not sit.

He explained that the cost of transportation and other expenses were huge especially for those traveling to Abuja for the case.

The IPOB leader is based overseas.
